Which tech giants are actually good at technology? (vs just have massively scaled businesses)

My theory is that Google is now in a place where decreasing organic link quality increases revenue, since the most relevant content has to pay to play. I don't think that this was ever an explicit policy, but a result of the way incentives naturally find local optima.

(I worked on the search product at Google until 2016 but never on anything related to organic search ranking, so this is more speculation than observation)

Well, they do seem worse the last two years IMO. I was bringing up a potential cause: first mover advantage. People are just locked in to Google right now because it is what you do. Back in the 90s switching search engines regularly was common since... 1/2

1) Web use was increasing rapidly so users weren't accustomed to one thing. 2) Search engines were terrible. Really just truly bad. If Google just has a marginal fall off in search capability, really, is the modal person going to switch to Bing or Duck Duck Go?
