i can’t believe the people responsible for botching this pandemic response are still in control whatever is keeping them in office is neither competence nor the appearance of competence

Trump spends all his time telling people how amazing he did blocking flights from China and how the counterfactual should be millions dead, so 200-400k or whatever it pans out to be, is really just great.

to be quite fair, the liberal media was all on about how blocking flights from china was racist! which, i mean, possibly sort of, since the correct response was to stop it all but nobody even mentioned the coronavirus during the first primary debate. it was a complete non-issue

The flights didn't matter, since the virus started between July and Oct in China, so blocking in Feb didn't matter. Especially without access to tests abs masks. The virus was already here.

well, that’s unclear to me, blocking flights does have a significant epidemiological effect, and the mutation that has outcompeted the others (more contagious) came from italy in Feb it buys time and controls spread *somewhat* trying to be fair to trump, he did enact a shutdown

Yeah, it was rocky but it happened. My mother and a co-worker were in Europe when the shutdown was happening so I followed it relatively closely. It was soft-announced for Europe and it prompted a ton of ex-pats to flood back in all at once. 5+ hour wait times at immigration...

... which couldn't be good for spread. But at the same time, most of the European lockdowns were relatively porous too.

yeah i’m not saying it was fast, and i’m not saying it went well, but it did happen, and it was very costly, and if trump has done one important and costly thing he should get some credit for it

Yes. But see that's his problem. That's all he's got on this and he keeps flogging it like we all did something more than just turning away flights.
