jstn.eth added,
The equipment is 1000 feet of iron pipe and a steel drillhead, the drilling fluid is a clay/water slurry. Deeply misleading headline, the stuff is basically biodegradable
it doesn't make much difference to me! 1000 feet of iron pipe and a steel drillhead do not belong in the ocean. if you dropped 6500 gallons of *anything* in my backyard (which i consider the oregon coast to be) i don't care if it's biodegradable, come clean it the fuck up
Feel how you want, i'm just pointing out the scare style in the headline. Everything left behind is inert &will just lithify over a few million years. The backyard metaphor is anthropically biased in size and timescale
you're probably mostly right in this, but it's bad precedent for corporations and especially Facebook to do what they want without sufficient standards or oversight, imho
Not even precedent tho, it's textbook undersea ops for decades. It's the reason bentonite slurry is used as drilling fluid, because it's naturally occurring &things break a lot. But FB bad so freakout. If you care about the ocean go protest gulf drilling
Facebook persists upon the unearned goodwill of citizens, it's appropriate to hold them to a higher standard. I've spent years working for cleaner energy; incidentally. Is it your position that it is ok to abandon drilling equipment *in general* or just in the case of accident
Environmental remediation means seeing things as they are. In many cases, yes, it is better to leave waste in situ to break down or remain inert, where removal would involve additional disturbance/destruction.
