the idea that "bias" is an engineering problem that tech companies can iterate out with a software update is exactly the kind of bullshit silicon valley wants us to believe. it's an intentional framing that keeps tech firms in control while ignoring questions about root causes.

it's the difference between fixing omissions in a dataset and questioning the necessity and harm potential of the system's existence. e.g. "non-binary people are not detected by the gender recognition algorithm" vs. "gender recognition is fundamentally harmful & shouldn't exist."
