I dunno, when the oil industry knows its impact will destroy the planet 30 years ago and suppresses that information from the public and the govt doesn’t hold it accountable because it relies on that industry’s lobby, it does feel like the rich have dangerous levels of control.

Ok I will concede that nobody is in control in any effective way for a whole change, but that is part of how corruption works: create chaos and pull strings in the rubble.

the charge against the elite is primarily one of negligence, not malice

I can’t imagine people of that caliber being indifferent or neglectful about anything. There’s just no incentive to change a system that they succeeded in, that they found a way to make work for themselves. That’s why it’s rare to find champions of systemic change among them.
