Do commercial great powers always pair military force with economic reach? Most historical examples I can think of do, the only exception I can think of is 1980s Japan.

arguably the top tech companies have power equivalent to the smaller of the great powers, (on a scale of back when there were a lot of them e.g. sweden was a great power...)

Given this, we should predict that we'll see these huge multinational, capital-rich companies build private military forces. Hasn't this already happened to some degree, especially where they operate in unsafe parts of the world?

depends, the most active war is the cyber and information (and by extension financial economic and biological war) and these new organisations may specialize
