watching the sf community hate on jason calcanis for wanting to set up a homeschool buble (he’s even offering 100% scholarships to students based on merit) is something else if you don’t like the solution propose yours, “the revolution is coming for you” takes are creepy & lazy

His kid would get more out of the arrangement. He curates the brightest co-students to elevate his child’s already advantaged position; they go back to a chronically static class rung. Just feels exploitative in the long run. I know he means well, but it’s a shallow solution.

a scalable solution could grow out of it, whereas public achool is locked into an absolute denial of the current solution let a million homeschool bubbles bloom imo

The problem is that private schooling of any kind undermines democracy. Just ask Betsy DeVos. (I say this while recognizing that public education could be improved greatly.)

Consider all those Christian academies in the South (and elsewhere). Plus I know (from my ex, a long-time math tutor in CoCo) that even in the Bay Area suburban home-schooling is a wingnut cess pool. White supremicists want to indoctrinate their kids, and home/private 1/

eliminating the right to homeschool private school or unschool yourself is totalitarian. the fact that our political rivals are exploiting some right doesn’t mean you should take legitimate uses of it away, particularly if it is to keep you and your family safe and educated

I don't see it as totalitarian, any more than needing to wear masks during a pandemic is. Or paying taxes, or needing a license to drive, etc. Of course some people see all of those as totalitarian.
