Might be partially dependent on the child and what level they are comfortable at performing on. I had to start my son a little behind grade level. We plan to complete 2 grade levels a year.

How Not To Be Wrong: The Power of Mathematical Thinking is an excellent way to intuitively spark kids’ imagination with mathematics. It reads more like a story and has crazy good examples, each of them just a google search away from more in depth knowledge.
