But doesn't the universe move toward towards greater entrophy? My interpretation of the image is that the forces simply take the path of least resistance. Not sure there is a simple relationship but wtf do I know.

This system did go to greater entropy by converting pendulum motion into heat friction. All the pendulum motion will convert to heat over time. The frictional heat is like tiny/molecular pendulums moving randomly or out of synch with each other and the large pendulums.

Okay. I get that, John. But why do the 5 synchronise? Is it the path of least resistance thing? I.e. by being in sync, the system loses kinetic energy to fiction quicker?

Yes, the out-of-synch system energy decays to more stable in-synch because that minimizes but does not eliminate friction. The system finds a gentler slope, as we all seek in heated times.
