Nobody thought they were just heads, very obviously: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahu_Tongariki …. But it is interesting to see one that's undamaged and largely uneroded. Was the script lost on the eroded ones? If so, this might mean a lot more script coming to light. Could AIs then decipher it?

More here: https://scitechdaily.com/mystery-of-easter-islands-moai-unearthing-the-meaning-of-the-ancient-monoliths/ …. Some years ago I did a bunch of reading on Rapa Nui, but hadn't heard about this new project. The actual paper is linked in the article.

Fake ? No way 500 years provide 4m sediments on an island without trees.

The island was forested originally. Have you ever seen heavy erosion in a sloped deforested landscape? It's a fast process. Details (paper linked): https://scitechdaily.com/mystery-of-easter-islands-moai-unearthing-the-meaning-of-the-ancient-monoliths/ …. Interestingly one of the statues was intentionally put in a hole, the other not.
