Excessive alcohol use impairs absorption of Niacin which is important for Tryptophan to be metabolized into Serotonin and a couple of other chemicals that help with sleep.

It's basically alcohol induced pellagra. Some are more suscpetible to it than others, and if your diet is already poor in niacin/tryptophan (or you have stomach issues like Crohn's) it can push it over the edge.
