I think this is putting too many expectations on humans. We have never had any control over the path of respiratory viruses. Many of us believe we do now but we don't. Maybe we will in the future. Asian countries have more influence over its path because they've had to learn.

I disagree strongly. I had to fight and win hundreds of arguments to express myself about the virus to people who should have known better, then the info on the coronavirus was censored off Facebook, Twitter, Google, and from WHO, actual professionals. The actual leaders get an F

SARS1 was a different beast. People were symptomatic as they were spreading the virus and I believe that most cases were quite severe so all who were infected went to a hospital quickly. SARS-CoV-2 is harder to deal with but some people and leaders are responding appropriately.

You're right that this is a different beast. So was smallpox. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smallpox#Transmission … So is measles, which is also spread via respiratory illness -- it is the most contagious virus known.
