I think we basically see eye-to-eye on this. Just a few points I'd add. First, BLM has been willfully misconstrued by the conservative media from the start, so the fact that this persists is not especially notable.

I know! but BLM should have been smart enough to know this would happen. of course they'd be copted, misconstrued. should have pulled back from physical battles earlier Killer Mike said it. Go home. Fill out your sentences. Organize. Plot. Plan. We're in a fucked sit w/ virus

But the BLM protests achieved more than anyone thought possible. We can't possibly know what the cost was, so cost/benefit isn't possible. One other thing I would caution about is the inclination to see BLM as a single thing that could make centralized decisions. It ain't.

you're right but the GIANT caveat is treating this as a historic moment *rather* than a rapidly changing strategic landscape with live players during an extremely active and unprecedented situation during a pandemic. What we do matters a huge amount & BLM people are in denial

"BLM people are in denial" seems too simplistic. Look, I'm deeply ambivalent here. I didn't go to any protests myself. But neither you nor I have spent our lives terrorized by the state. So neither of us can make these tradeoffs easily without the voices of those who have.

Actually. I have. I have supported the rights of protestors from the beginning and have spent literally hundreds of hours tweeting about the issue. And I've spent thousands of hours this year reporting on the coronavirus. And viral/police/economic oppression combines. I can speak

If I had more chars to spare: I'd have said "politically motivated media, articles, analysis, and defence is in denial of the direct physical effects of the protests, and the massive, terrifying, catastrophic memetic effects that it could have. not part of discussion"

I wasn't doubting your commitment to these issues. I was saying that neither of us is a target for state surveillance. That doesn't mean that we can't be involved in the discussion; just that we can't be the only ones.

Anyway, I think we basically see eye-to-eye on this. The notes of caution you raise seem totally valid. We may not agree on how we weight the evidence in our own synthesis, but we probably don't have to...

understood. i'm not making the judgment precisely, i'm trying to declare the uncomfortable truth that others on "this side" aren't declaring so there's at least space for reasonable discussion. thank you for participating in the discussion.
