Elon Musk continues to make news for “crazy tweets” and other stunts like naming his son X AE A-12. Most explain this as the result of stress or mental illness. In fact, @elonmusk is doing something important: making engineers cool again. How does this make any sense?

First, this is not something new. Wasn’t launching the Tesla Roadster into space a crazy stunt? Most think yes. Was it the result of stress or mental illness? Few seem to think so. (2/n)

Stunts are not done for no reason, but to achieve a goal, such as showcasing how rockets can be sexy and high status. This motivates people to work on rockets. I explained this here: http://samoburja.com/how-elon-musk-is-making-engineers-cool-again/ … (3/n)

Everyone knows the Tesla Roadster stunt was a stunt, because it was explicitly labelled as such. But just because when Elon posts a crazy tweet, it is not labelled a stunt, does not mean it is not also a stunt, also with a purpose. (4/n)

Posting crazy tweets and similar is a demonstration of the freedom and ability to post crazy tweets. It is the freedom to cause controversy on a whim, which is associated with celebrities. Celebrities are high status. Celebrities are cool. (5/n)

Think of the most popular celebrities and how much controversy they cause with their “crazy tweets” or similar. Kanye West. Donald Trump. Jake Paul. Now, you have to think of Elon Musk too. And how many other engineers can you think of in this category? Probably just Elon. (6/n)

Elon is demonstrating his freedom and ability to be crazy and cause controversy with the purpose of associating rockets, space travel, and engineers with celebrities. This makes the former sexy and cool, with the result of motivating others to work on those things. (7/n)

Especially in the age of cancellation, where a wrong tweet can lead to life-altering consequences, there is a greater separation in freedom between “normies” and celebrities and this effect is stronger than ever. Elon isn’t crazy. He’s just making engineers cool again. (8/n)
