What the heck is the Fed doing *not even* accounting for COVID19 and response in its forecasts. *I* do that for my investments and I'm just a single person. Come on!https://twitter.com/quantian1/status/1272028611239952384 …

Atlanta Fed needed to add a bunch of bold-faced red text disclaimers to Q2 GDPNow on account of it reading, uhhh, -50% annualized (yes yes that's *only* -12% q/q, but still!) pic.twitter.com/EOnZPvfXxF

I mean technically, they are buying up sharing and bonds in businesses, ok? So they're investing on behalf of the American people. *YOU WOULD WANT THEM* to have a specific guiding view on how things will go with COVID19 *before* you have them buy shares in cruiseliners & airlines

I wouldn't say they're "investing" on behalf of the American people—at least not in the traditional sense of seeking a profit. Think of the Fed as a sort of non-profit market maker, or even a loss-making one, that subsidizes liquidity, and maybe certain other things.

Here's the fine point: Why is it subsidising the liquidity of the murderous Carnival Corp, and hundreds of other Zombie companies, instead of the American people? It's socialized responsibility, because the Fed has a monopoly power which it is using to support an unequal system

Oh, I totally agree. It's just the notion of the Fed as an "investor" rather than a market maker of last resort that I was disagreeing with. Of course, once the Fed starts buying corporate bonds etc. it's very hard to see them as doing this job with any neutrality.

I just think the Fed should accept responsibility here since the president clearly won't, and provide liquidity and loans effectively and directly to the American people and small businesses. That would make a safe reopening / spot lockdowns survivable.

I agree. To the extent we need the Fed, I'd like it to be a lot less intermediated for sure.
