No, I mean, I'm imagining, like, a communications protocol between electromagnetically interacting particles. I'm imagining the protocol like as like ants, they're emitted until they reach, say, food, and then they come back to the emitter -- the photon fires on the reverse.

Distance would end up being defined by the length of time something took on the reverse trip. But the probabilities, and therefore interactions, might shift depending on the structure of the space.
