I don't agree but this gave me pause. Can I ask @johncarlosbaez and @michael_nielsen if you have time, what do you think?https://twitter.com/QiaochuYuan/status/1199785786456985600 …

"mathematicians mostly don't work on anything remotely useful"? That's complete bullshit. I hope Qiaochu was just trying to get a rise out of people. Can someone get figures on the number of pure vs. applied mathematicians? They have to include industry jobs.

There's context here; I think QC is mostly thinking about pure mathematicans at *elite* places, who tend to relegate applied mathematicians to "second class" in private, and only signal solidarity with them to the broad public when they need to show math is useful.

I was put off by "rely on nobody understanding..." but on second thought, that's just *true* (again, conditioned on pure mathematicians). Grants are the main source of funding for elite dpts, and the amount of bullshitting for applications on successful grants I've seen is insane

i had (probably still have) some anger about my grad school experiences to work through and the reactions to that tweet showed me it was just not a good idea to not own that more fully. unproductively pissed off several people

Yeah that's a lot of stuff that's off the main edges. Love some of the amazing work from people like Thurston and Perlman though.
