Louis would have agreed. Also, as arguably the person most responsible for the success of the American revolution, he would have thought that the person who made off with the hand was an ingrate.

it was not he but his nation, and if he had not been so waffling, the french revolution wouldn't have been so terribly mishandled. btw it took some real heroics by Marie Antoinette to calm things down after the women's march took Versailles.

Indeed. The main motive was to poke a finger in British eyes. But especially after the disaster in the Caribbean, he was eager to take as much credit as he could for the success in America.

Helping the American Revolution was a revenge after the desastrous Treaty of Paris of 1763 which concluded the 7 Years War (the one in Barry Lyndon) by surrendering Canada to the British, hence the persecuted French Canadians of Quebec.
