The personal growth vs. institutional change debate will never end. This is the real punishment for our sins.https://twitter.com/edelwax/status/1265534412806074370 …

Yes, humans are malleable. But beware anyone who talks of reinventing people or culture as a step *before* reinventing social systems. They’re likely justifying their own work (neo-monasteries, leadership trainings, personal growth, …) & hiding a lack of institutional ideas.

It's very convenient that people tend to emphasize what they happen to be working on

It would make sense to focus on the skills/expertise/traits that are in short supply. So let’s compare “grit” and “EQ” with the kinds of social design expertise illustrated in (1) the federalists papers informing the U.S. constitution, or

Theories of change are important to discuss and criticize!

I agree, it's just that the mirror image of your critique can be leveled towards the 'institutional design will save the world' people. In reality it's a complex feedback loop and they need to bootstrap each other

This is how Power comes into play - systemic design leads to more powerful top-down changes (nations, cities, individuals), while a transformed individual has to compete with Game A System + other voices, basically failing to create Critical Escape Velocity 99% of times.

99.9% by my estimates, or worse. it's 1/1000 at the large scales. it's just hidden because of the semi-effectiveness of copying

could you please expand on "because of the semi-effectiveness of copying"?

lots of organisations and cities. & business types are just copying a basic idea which is innovated elsewhere, and making more minor changes, as opposed to inventing new paradigms. those are good businesses, but they are not the main source of value creation, often new paradigms
