that turned out well like.. TWICE and Cincinnatus was probably just a legend and Fabius was hated by everyone for being too chill

Importantly it didn't turn out poorly the other times. It just failed to help. By the time the Empire phase kicked in it was a welcomed relief from constant civil war of a failing republic. The dictator mechanism wasn't used for the transition. Rather the consulship & legions.

Absolutely loved the Storm before the Storm by @mikeduncan which informs a lot of my thinking here.
My basic belief is that it *would* help in this instance.
I don't think Trump would have lasted long as a Caesar.
