I think you are underestimating the superiority of the U.S military. I’m no military expert, but China has yet to reach key milestones that the U.S reached decades ago.

Yes, but we also don't know if they've also reached milestones *we* haven't reached, including ones which make reaching other milestones less pressing. If they've discovered a strategic advantage on par with the atom bomb, I don't think we should assume our govts are aware of it.

I don't think we can know who is ahead of whom with much certainty, outside of a hot war. It's like sizing up two big dudes at a bar. One might be a little more drunk, the other might have a health issue. One might have a hidden knife. Unless they brawl, it's speculation.
