Current progressive gender theory seems really inadequate, but it's popular because it's serving an important function - it's giving name and validation to actual experiences people are having. Does anyone have suggestions for a different theory that serves this function better?

for the more "niche" gender stuff, I think a lot of it would be covered (wrt terminology/conceptual organization) with a word like "vibe" (but less vague, more fleshed out)

Hmmmm (aura/sense/mode/state/structure/interface/model) all come to mind, but any term but "gender" seems to downgrade the experience, imply it's somehow less core than I think it is? Although to me all the above are lemmas also associated with traditional gender stuff to me

yeah, there isn't a term that does it justice imo (yet?) it's this whole Thing about identity/presentation/aesthetic/Feeling/whatever??? that got deeply embedded into the "social display of sex and associated traits/roles" structure

Sex is as sex does. If you fight to move heaven and earth, go willingly into hell and fight your way out for your loved one, is that a sexual act? I think it is. When you raise a child you give birth to a universe, but this is true of other actions, too. The key is life.
