my husband’s family actually lived under that, in a way. his maternal grandfather had a long patrilineal descent from the last king of minangkabau, a matriarchal society weirdly, it’s somehow more of the same repression we’re supposed to be eschewing here

yeah, I think it's not about the decent of humankind, but the *ascent* it's not about where you come from, it's about what you take with you, and where you're going.

indeed, in the end descent mattered none. both the matriarchal side and the islamic patriarchal side actually canceled each other out quite dramatically. they just became middle class by then

anyone that can survive modern life as a family with their spirit and sanity intact is clearly nobility, in my book.
