There is an old adage: don’t mix family and business. This cliché statement holds little weight; as family-control is the predominate business structure. Behemoths like Walmart & Samsung are family affairs & the Jewish RE families of NY have written a century-long masterclass.

Family business is a ubiquitous staple of humanity. Why? It’s a simple answer. They work. According to BCG research, nearly one-third of all companies with sales in excess of $1 billion are fam-biz. In the data and on-the-ground, fam-biz have a clear competitive advantage.

Fam-biz often have unique modus operandi; there are inherent advantages. Long-term philosophy – more R&D, less-leverage – and genetic bonds of trust (manifesting in softening of Machiavellian, game-theoretic tendencies amongst leadership) have fantastic effects.

Governance tends to be effective; nearly all successful families have established hierarchy and a good dose of discipline. Since employees work directly with owners, there is a pronounced loyalty effect. Successful employees become soldiers of the family.

The majority of mid/large-cap public company management have insignificant skin in the game. These barnacles-in-suits create no alpha. Lose the owner’s mindset & your company becomes risk-averse and bureaucratic; mucking up the value-creating culture of conquest.

The evidence is clear: fam-biz outperforms & fam-biz alpha is found in every sector. When it comes down to it, family is simply willing to go to bat (for each other) with intensity rarely found in other businesses. They are working for their kids and grandkids; hence = alpha.
