not a conspiracy! it's a power struggle! this has been an ageless theme of our species. so it definitely indicates the in-built flaws... but we can develop good habits just like we develop bad ones! natural healthy selfishness turns into greed due to concentration of power.

plus, there's a lot of confusion due to excessive information (too much noise, too little signal), our own limited processing capabilities (we get tired!), our communication and co-ordination problems...

and with little power to do anything but watch the news etc. (too much consumerism, too little creation...) the masses grow exasperated, feel disempowered, helpless, turning a sense of the problems into "oh what can i do? i can't change the world." ... or...
