Something someone said a few weeks ago still stays in my mind. She said in her experience, most of the people others see as "fake" are being completely authentic and just value different things than you do, i.e. genuinely placing great meaning in money or material possessions.

I have no objection. It's possible people are speaking at different levels of abstraction, because if this is about something specific that's not context I have. I don't personally believe everyone is authentic to themselves, but I'm all for giving everyone every chance to be.
