Debating the fundament of failed futurism
@PeterThiel published a provocative book review of The Decadent Society. For most of the 21st-Century, he has been puzzled by the apparent stagnation of progress, in science, technology and the economy.

I think Eric Weinstein made a good point in Episode 1 of the Portal when he noted that an enormous amount of the contribution in many fields of science and technology have come from physics thinking and physics minds populating new orchards and getting all the low hanging fruit

@EricRWeinstein that if you actually did an accounting on the outsize effect that physics has had, even recently, on the modern world, that it would be enormous, by far the plurality. They invented pretty much modern mole bio, much of CS, data science, and so on. - 1 more reply

Seems to me that this is broadly right about the supply side of ideas, our educational and scientific resources and tools, and doesn't speak about the insanely broken systems that slow us down and kill ideas. The idea kill ratio in certain fields is like nearly 100% for decades!

Covid19 is a crisis at massive scale. Two numbers to think about. Contagious enough to maybe scale to 60% infected. 327 mm US ppl, 15% severe cases: 29.4mm severe cases Only 95,000 ICU beds in the whole country, maybe 1/10 as many respirators. Problem if it hits us all at once!
