hard to tell signal from noise with high hiring bars; places like ARPA had very unusual and time consuming and long lead time methods, including training them in groups since the start of graduate school in like camping trips with all the top grad students

Fair point. The main thing I look for is a mission orientation - and this is key - that starts with the CEO. Lots of people talk about mission, but few live it. When it's real, it sweeps aside an awful lot of the petty bullshit that is otherwise typical. But it has to be REAL.

It's hard to tell if it's real or BS from the outside (tho there are some tells). But the best test is to see if they will forgo an opportunity for the sake of the mission. It's a version of the Most Important Question: how do you want to suffer?https://markmanson.net/question
