There’s probably a distinction here too, between an idealism where they end up unhappy because they see how much is wrong. And an idealism where they are happy because they see the beauty in how things work and their ability to improve them and help others improve them.

Maybe there's a distinction but I suspect there's not. Caring quite a bit about things often leads to disappointment. I think my & my wife's idealism frequently leaves us unhappy about the state of all sorts of world things. We don't think that's any excuse for nihilism, though.
