I've had a lot of fun diving into the AC world for short bursts a few times this past week. The "i love my character" aspect is very strong & I want to keep collecting things... but the social/online stuff is insanely weak for a videogame in 2020.

I started designing my island today into a thing 100% built for socializing with friends (being vague bc it's going to be wild when i finish it). But I'm dreading the actual "invite your friends & wait for them to show" part of it all, using the separate mobile app for voice.

Loving making my own digital garden (not bc plants, but tending to a space that's mine that I can easily share)... Yet I have the clear sense of a pending end much sooner than I desire. My twitter and IG are 10+ years old. Why can't my AC island be the same?

For sure, I get why people like this. I visited a friend's island, & it was fun! Fun to see what they built. Just personally aren't compelled by the aesthetic / mechanics vs. a regular chat or different platform. People have been pushing virtual spaces since before second life.

I think it would be a cool place to have meetings that you'd otherwise have on Zoom or Google Hangouts. I like the idea of doing a walking group hangout through someone's island. (Disclaimer: I don't own the new AC, but I played the GameCube and Wii versions extensively)

Yeah, I guess I'm just not the demo for that. For me, Animal Crossing is something I want to play for a half-hour a day if that, collect some fossils and fish, see what's for sale, and log out. Just can't see what having a virtual presence would add to a voice chat.

The iOS app lets you do some of this incl chat but agreed Nintendo is pretty high friction for online. I think some this is a relentless anti abuse focus

) if Nintendo was *much* better at building online experiences.
Imagine if AC had voice in-game, you could visit friends w/o the awkward offline social handshakes, and a lot more. It'd be so fun.
