In a totally unrelated story, practitioners of the following sports received their first equipment prior to 18: ALL OF THEM! This is not news. Kids want to do what their parents do so parents get them equipment. Parents should use combination safes to limit kids' access.

There is a difference: teens living in rural Montana who have a gun to hunt and pop tin cans vs the teens on the S. side of Chicago who have guns to shoot each other. How do the stats actually break down? I suspect stats are skewed by hi risk cohorts, i.e.

Children/teens going hunting/trap shooting/plinking with their parents is a far different population of people than the perpetuators of these homicides you mention. Of the studies I've read, anywhere from 50-80% are involved in gangs and/or drug trafficking.
