I understand some rationale for tabs (esp. screen readers) but I’ve yet to free myself from the four-space club. There are just never any surprises no matter what tool you end up using to look at diffs, for example. (Thinking of Trac/gitlab/etc.)

It works well if people strictly follow the rule of using tabs for indent blocks and spaces for alignment. In practice, people like aligning things with whitespace and everyone knowing that rule let alone following it is impractical. It's hard to enforce without tooling for it.
