A major reason for using Cloudflare is that you simply drop it in front of your web sites and get a free unmetered/uncapped caching reverse proxy reducing load on the servers. If you use a host like OVH with unmetered/uncapped bandwidth and DDoS mitigation, it's less appealing.

Transparent pricing without metering is really nice at any scale. You get that with providers like OVH, Hetzner, rage4, etc. for the most part. I'm omitting one that has a similar policy as Cloudflare when it comes to being willing to host despicable but borderline legal content.

Cloudflare lures you in with their free web proxy service with cheap fixed monthly tiers and then once you're in the door start draining your money with non-competitively priced metered services just like AWS and other large providers. Took over half the internet with that model.

You aren't allowed to host anything but web content with the web reverse proxy. Look at the "Limitation on Serving Non-HTML Content" section in cloudflare.com/terms/. People who use it at scale for more than just web pages get contacted and moved to the expensive services.
