I am confused why this is impolite? Is it because the people who think so are microagressing the asker and assuming a hidden agenda? What agenda? Could I ask this question as a way to accept and acknowledge and celebrate another's diverse path and your unique awesomeness? 😕

No matter how sweetly you ask it, “Where are you from?” is not a polite question.

the reason is people ask you and you say like "new york" and they're like "no i mean your parents, obviously, it was a question about race" and ur like well don't be annoying and make me guess lol

it's annoying cause if you answer your hometown you might look like a snowflake purposely avoiding the question and if you answer your ethnicity you seem like you've giving a low estimation of the other person's social graces. but also people should just not beat around the bush

yeah i mean who is doing the punishing? basically i answer the question with "new york and my parents are from china" to get through it and people either respond "ahhh yes china, my wife is from vietnam" or "oh no i wasn't asking about your ethnicity im so sorry my bad im sorry"
