Jonathan Scott is a con artist who engages in abusive behavior towards people debunking it. The university is dissociating themselves from clear cut scamming, fraud and harassment. Trying to make this into part of a US culture war is sad. Also, mental illness doesn't excuse it.

Their university expelling them is entirely warranted. They even invoked their involved there repeatedly to give their claims credibility.
People giving them a bunch of unwarranted attention and directing harassment/bullying towards them in response is part of the problem too.

I think they genuinely believe a lot of the bullshit they peddle, but they're harming people. Most journalists aren't very scrupulous and end up amplifying these scammers. Privacy and security industries are packed with whole companies built on more tame variants of that stuff.

This person has had plenty of opportunity to stop their bullshit and course correct. It's pretty clear they aren't going to do that unless something very life altering happens like getting a lot of help with their issues. They shouldn't be in any position of influence right now.

They also involved the university in this themselves. Since they were using their involvement at the university to give themselves credibility, it's part of the problem. I'm sure there are academic standards for ethics, etc. for those programs that are supposed to be enforced.
