Find it funny how scp (more secure) is faster than samba (less secure).

It's unfortunately still much slower than HTTPS for high bandwidth links with typical internet tier latency.
I get 2x higher bandwidth via HTTPS compared to sftp/scp for downloading from our update servers in France/Germany from Toronto.
Directly using SSH is a bit less bad.

Yeah, that's because ssh has its own window buffering that happens. Things have gotten better though. In my case, it was local over wifi, and samba was on the 10MB/sec range and scp got into the 40s.
