federation is honestly worst of all possible worlds from an abuse mitigation point of view, too much trust is extended to make federated systems work, which makes abuse ridiculously easy.

This is an interesting distinction to me, "federated vs. p2p". It seems to me that this is a complicated spectrum and even 'truly p2p' systems probably need federation of some sort at some level (ie. bittorrent is p2p but I think you could argue trackers as an ad-hoc federation?)
