I should mention: The problem isn't that programs emit text; text is fine. The problem is that there's no standard way to parse that text, so people invent various ad-hoc things.

It'll be nice when groups.google.com/a/chromium.org finally ends up shipping. They started doing a trial but didn't go ahead with it. I suspect they got scared by the anti-trust concerns raised about it even though all the information was still going to be available by default anyway...
