The domain they’re squatting on is scarce, like a UTXO.
I’m not suggesting that DNS is a currency, just a commodity.

not scarce, there are many GTLDs, ppl just go w/ variations diluting the original. example, I own the trademark SATSCARD, the .com is squatted. so use getsatscard and own statscard dot everything and also sats-card dot everything, no serious brand will buy the squated .com

There was someone squatting on grapheneos.com but they liked the concept of the OS so much that they gave it to us in exchange for sending them a spare past generation phone with the OS. They had originally registered a bunch of 'graphene' variant domains in 2013/2014.

I think they realized there was no way that a non-profit open source project was going to pay them the many thousands of dollars they wanted and decided to get something cool out of it. It was before we had a web installer so it wouldn't have been easy for them to install it.
