moxie article good
tech problems like relying on OS api, lack of hash verification etc are solveable
but people not wanting to run their own servers is much less so

light clients aren’t deployed in basically any wallets that people are using except for in the bitcoin ecosystem. they address the rpc authenticity/neutrality concern that moxie raised

Bitcoin full nodes also don't take a lot of resources. You can happily run one on a smartphone without it consuming a ton of resources. The main issue is the bandwidth usage which makes light clients super important for mobile use and also anywhere without great internet service.

Main Monero desktop wallet uses a full node (optionally with pruning) just like the traditional Bitcoin desktop wallet. Every serious Bitcoin and Monero wallet is a proper light client that's at least validating PoW. It's actually very weird that Ethereum ended up the way it did.
totally agree, it’s odd. maybe some of the eth people can shed light as to why. tendermint also has mature light clients, but they’re not yet implemented in the common user-facing wallet software. we can do better
