this depends on the particular mask in question! for disposable N95 and N100/P100 respirators, there are a lot that have exhalation valves (e.g. 3M CoolFlow), but there are also a lot of valveless products (e.g. all “duckbill”-style masks)

i have been using 3M 7500- and 6500-series elastomeric respirators, and i would recommend them overall. if you’re looking for a mask without an exhalation valve, i recently bought an MSA Advantage 900, and so far, i highly recommend it

the Advantage 900 also has a speaking diaphragm, which should make it easier for other people to understand you when you’re wearing it

on the other hand, one nice thing about 3M masks is that they’re pretty common and you can find filters for them at most hardware stores

The 3M inhalation valves are designed to be replaced so you can remove them and then use one of multiple approaches to block the exhaust like using decent tape to tape over it externally. Could also do something with the valve internally but then people couldn't see you did it.
