When I was a kid I had Lego gears, so I had a good sense of how differential gearing worked. And then one winter my parents' car got stuck in the driveway, and I watched as one wheel spun freely while the other didn't move at all.

The early robotics kits were amazing. I think the first one I got was the either the "Robotics Discovery Set" or "Robotics Invention Set" with the blue programmable computer. Also got one of the RCX "Robotics Invention System" ones later on but I'm not sure which version it was.

It would have been a neat way to get into actual programming. I just used the visual programming software though. There are still open source projects targeting those things. It was an amazing platform and you got to use existing Technic stuff with that too. Sad they killed it.
