It's 3:15 am and I'm currently standing with my head cocked sideways on a ladder in a high ceiling stairway spanning 3 floors, hoping to echolocate which smoke/carbon monoxide detector's battery has died. While 3 dogs wail plaintively. The screeching alarm beeps are intermittent.

I think those beeps must be painful for them because my dog hates them too. I'm sure he also associates it with the smoke alarm going off since it makes similar beeps after it gets silenced. I have to take out the battery or he'll run around in a panic each time it beeps.
