i ordered a gas mask with N95-equivalent cartridges, seems to be the better way to go than using N95 masks themselves

There are reusable 3M mask cartridges with replaceable filters. The filters themselves aren't one-time use and are inside of the plastic cartridge so you don't end up touching them when taking the mask on and off. It's not necessary to replace them each time you use the mask.

It costs around $3 per official 3M N95 filter if you're buying the packs of 10. If you're replacing them around every 60 hours (weekly) then that's $24 / month since you're using 2 at a time. If you work from home and only go out occasionally then the cost would be far less.
