Just discovered that Canada has a very broad law that bans the public carrying of many types of knives, such as folding knives, that could be used as a weapon. However the law has an *explicit* carve-out for sword canes

They ban automatically opening knives but not knives or swords in general. It's permitted to own and carry around most normal knives/swords as long as you don't intend to use it as a weapon. If you carry around a non-folding knife (or certain folding ones) as a tool, that's fine.

They'd probably change that pretty fast if people started frequently killing each other with crossbows and swords but I don't think there's much chance of that happening. It's easy for people to get guns from the US anyway. Some of the laws about it are pretty silly stuff.

The thing that has always confused me is that pepper spray is illegal in Canada but bear spray is legal. They're the same chemical. I guess it's assumed to be not very hard to ascertain intent.
