is the new cowboy bebop any good? i didn't really like the original, even though i recognized it was a masterpiece, it just wasn't for me.

It's decent and enjoyable enough to watch. I think a lot of people watched the original as kids just like I did and have warped memories of it. I think they remember it as taking itself far more seriously than it did. Other people simply can't cope with it being silly/campy.

If you take it as a standalone thing, it's a decent 7/10 campy sci-fi show. It's not a bad adaptation but they aren't particularly faithful to it.
I'd rather have season 4 and 5 of Dark Matter but I'll take what I can get. If you haven't watched that, I'd recommend it over this.
I think most critics don't understand what they were trying to make or the genres. It's typical for them to trash something like this. It's also pretty much expected that fans of the original aren't happy with an adaptation not sticking to exactly the same style/content.
