I don't think that fits into (2). They largely wrapped things up in season 8 because they weren't sure if the show would be continued. I think that's less odd than their usual approach of ending on a cliffhanger and wrapping it up in the first 1-3 episodes of the next season.

It's not unusual for a show to keep being extended, especially when it's not a show where things were planned out much in advance. It's from a different era of TV. The seasons have more than 20 episodes and it's largely episodic content. It literally has recap clip show episodes.

Richard Dean Anderson moving to LA to be with his daughter, Don S. Davis moving on and Farscape being cancelled led to the major cast changes. Combined with how they'd wrapped things up in season 8, they just decided they wanted to do things differently as basically a new show.

I don't think it qualifies as (2) because they wrapped things up nicely and then decided to produce what was essentially a spin-off series as the last 2 seasons. Most of the fans liked it and there's not much they could do about the fan favorite actor choosing family over work.
