The writers/producers of Dark Matter had the story planned out in advance for a 5 season show. SyFy cancelled it after the 3rd season despite it doing well. It ended on a huge cliffhanger leading into the much different season 4/5 story arcs.

IIRC it cost something like $3 million per episode (far cheaper than higher budget shows) so it would have been at least around $39 million dollars for 2x 13 episodes for seasons 4 and 5. Imagine a network locking themselves into a high budget show like Game of Thrones for years.
