not dropped “Redis” into the name my entire perspective would have been different. It just feels like “our own thing, but coasting on Redis’ brand.”

Is AWS coasting on Linux’s brand? If not how do Redis and Linux (eg, EC2) differ? Not that I particularly stan AWS, just trying to understand how these things add up.

There are explicit rules for using the trademarks: linuxfoundation.org/trademark-usag redis.io/topics/tradema If they don't fully comply with the Redis API or don't use Redis as a basis for it then that would be a trademark violation. It's explicitly stated to be fine if they do both.

This is an interesting topic for OSS (at least for me). The Redis guidelines linked above state that calling something "... for Redis" is acceptable. Alas, the AWS guidelines are not as easy to understand.
