I think the main point here is that 95+% of Americans have no idea how to pronounce Mughal, nor the slightest idea what it might refer to, beyond maybe a vague notion that maybe it has to do with the subcontinent?

As a European, one can easily extrapolate, people from North-America tend to have no clue how non-English words are pronounced, period. Even in Canada, I was continuously baffled by the ways in which French (!) words were being butchered in this bi-lingual country 🤷♂️

French as an official language is an oddity outside of Quebec and the Maritimes. As an example:

I had 9 years of French immersion, largely because it's treated as a form of enriched program in public schools. I've never really used French for anything.

It's just a gradual process of almost completely forgetting all of it since I have no use for it. It would be a lot more practical to have learned Chinese.
I could probably still pick it up again quickly, and I probably still have a bunch of verb conjugation rules memorized...
